Their Story
Jaimie Elizabeth Leonard was a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army. She was 39 years old and from Warrick, New York. She served with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Drum, New York. Her service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On June 8, 2013, Leonard was killed in a rocket attack on Forward Operating Base Sharana in Paktika province, Afghanistan. The base was struck by indirect fire, a term the military uses for projectiles like rockets or mortars. The attack reportedly wounded several other service members.
Leonard's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2013, the conflict was in a phase where international forces were training Afghan security forces and drawing down their presence. Insurgent attacks on coalition bases remained frequent.
The Department of Defense officially announced Leonard's death on June 9, 2013. She was posthumously promoted from Major to Lieutenant Colonel. Her awards included the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
