Their Story
Joshua Allen Lengstorf was a 24-year-old sergeant from Yoncalla, Oregon. He served with Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, part of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, based at Fort Carson, Colorado. Lengstorf had previously deployed to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before his assignment to Afghanistan.
On January 3, 2010, Lengstorf was on a dismounted patrol in the village of Ashoque, located in the volatile Kunar Province of eastern Afghanistan. Lengstorf's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the 9/11 attacks. By 2010, U.S. troop levels in Afghanistan were at their peak.
His death was officially announced by the Department of Defense. In Oregon, the Douglas County Board of Commissioners passed a resolution honoring his service. He was survived by his wife, parents, and siblings.
