Staff Sergeant Dick Alson Lee Jr. was a 31-year-old soldier from Orange Park, Florida. He served with the 529th Military Police Company, 95th Military Police Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade, based in Sembach, Germany. His service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On April 26, 2012, Lee was killed in Ghazni province, Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, he died of wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire while on patrol. The incident occurred in the volatile Andar district, a known insurgent stronghold.
Lee's death came during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2012, U.S. forces were engaged in a counterinsurgency strategy focused on training Afghan security forces and conducting stability operations, particularly in eastern provinces like Ghazni.
The Pentagon officially announced Lee's death on April 28, 2012. He was posthumously promoted from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant. His awards included the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
Lee is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Clay County Courthouse in Florida. His name is also inscribed on the Afghanistan and Iraq War Memorial in Orange Park's Town Hall.
