Their Story

Staff Sgt. Daniel Tyler Lee was a soldier assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he was a native of Crossville, Tennessee, and was 28 years old at the time of his death.

Lee died on January 15, 2014, in Wazghar, a village in the Ghazni province of Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile enemy action. A contemporaneous report from the Associated Press noted that the incident involved small arms fire during a combat operation.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By early 2014, the U.S. had drawn down its surge forces and was transitioning security responsibilities to Afghan forces, though combat operations against Taliban and other insurgent groups continued in provinces like Ghazni.

Following his death, Lee was posthumously promoted from Sergeant First Class to Staff Sergeant. He was survived by his wife and children. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried in his home state of Tennessee.

Lee's name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the 3rd Special Forces Group compound at Fort Bragg. He is also listed on the website of the Special Forces Association, Chapter 100, which honors fallen Green Berets from his unit.
