Their Story
Ivan Derek Lechowich was a 27-year-old first lieutenant from Valrico, Florida. He was assigned to the 515th Engineer Company, 5th Engineer Battalion, 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, based at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On September 28, 2011, Lechowich died in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan. The Pentagon stated his death was the result of hostile action. He was reportedly killed by an improvised explosive device while on a route clearance mission, a task assigned to engineer units to locate and disarm roadside bombs.
Lechowich's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, the war was in its tenth year, with coalition forces engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in eastern provinces like Ghazni. That year was one of the deadliest for U.S. forces in the conflict.
Following his death, Lechowich was posthumously promoted from first lieutenant to captain. His body was returned to the United States, and a memorial service was held in his hometown. The Army awarded him the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
Lechowich was survived by his wife and parents. He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans Park in Tampa, Florida, and his name appears on Panel 2R, Line 127 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum. He was one of 1,844 U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan in 2011.
