U.S. Army Specialist Daniel Courtney Lawson, 33, of Deerfield Beach, Florida, was killed by hostile fire on October 15, 2009, at the Arghandab River Bridge in Afghanistan.

Their Story

Daniel Courtney Lawson was a 33-year-old soldier from Deerfield Beach, Florida. He served as a Specialist in the 569th Engineer Company, 4th Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, part of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Carson, Colorado.

On October 15, 2009, Lawson was part of a unit conducting operations near the Arghandab River Bridge in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. According to U.S. military reports, his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. He died from wounds sustained in the blast.

Lawson's death occurred during a period of intense fighting in southern Afghanistan. In late 2009, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in major operations to secure key terrain around Kandahar, a Taliban stronghold. The Arghandab River Valley was a frequent site of insurgent attacks and IED emplacements.

His death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in several news outlets. He was survived by his family in Florida. Lawson was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.

Lawson is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists and at Fort Carson. His unit, the 569th Engineer Company, was tasked with route clearance, a dangerous mission critical to countering the widespread use of IEDs by insurgent forces.
