Captain Joshua Sean Lawrence, 29, of Nashville, Tennessee, was a U.S. Army officer assigned to Fort Carson, Colorado. He was killed in Kandahar City, Afghanistan, on October 9, 2011.
Their Story
Joshua Sean Lawrence was a 29-year-old captain in the United States Army. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, based at Fort Carson, Colorado. Lawrence was a native of Nashville, Tennessee.
According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Captain Lawrence died on October 9, 2011, in Kandahar City, Afghanistan. The official cause was listed as hostile fire. He was reportedly killed by an improvised explosive device while on a mounted patrol, according to contemporaneous news reports from the time of his death.
Lawrence's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, the southern province of Kandahar, the birthplace of the Taliban, remained a focal point of intense counterinsurgency operations and was one of the deadliest regions for coalition forces.
Following his death, Captain Lawrence was posthumously promoted from the rank of first lieutenant to captain. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried in his home state of Tennessee. The 4th Infantry Division and officials at Fort Carson issued statements honoring his service.
Captain Lawrence was survived by his wife and other family members. He was one of at least 1,800 U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan in 2011, the deadliest year of the war for American forces.
