Their Story
Sean Kanae-aldrique Langevin was a 23-year-old soldier from Walnut Creek, California. He served as a Corporal in Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team based in Vicenza, Italy. The brigade was a primary U.S. Army unit deployed to Afghanistan under Operation Enduring Freedom.
On November 9, 2007, Langevin was killed during combat operations in the Aranus district of Afghanistan's Konar province. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was engaged by enemy small-arms fire. Langevin was one of two soldiers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade killed in the same engagement that day.
Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led international military effort in Afghanistan, began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By late 2007, the conflict was characterized by intense counterinsurgency operations in eastern provinces like Konar, where U.S. and allied forces contested Taliban and other insurgent groups in rugged terrain.
Langevin's death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in several news outlets. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. His remains were returned to the United States for burial.
Corporal Langevin is remembered on the Afghanistan War casualty lists and memorialized by his unit and community. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the 173rd Airborne Brigade headquarters in Italy and is included in the 'Faces of the Fallen' project documenting U.S. service members killed in the war.
