Their Story
Staff Sergeant Randall Ray Lane was a 43-year-old soldier from Indianapolis, Indiana. He served with the 1438th Transportation Company, 190th Motor Transportation Battalion, part of the 38th Sustainment Brigade of the Indiana Army National Guard, based at Camp Atterbury.
On September 13, 2013, SSG Lane was killed in Kabul, Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, he died from wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire. He was serving as part of a security force assistance team, a mission focused on training and advising Afghan National Security Forces.
Lane's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2013, the mission had largely shifted from direct combat to a train, advise, and assist role as international forces prepared to withdraw. The security situation in Kabul remained volatile, with insider attacks and targeted violence against coalition personnel.
Following his death, the Indiana National Guard confirmed the loss. Lane was posthumously promoted from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant. His body was returned to Indiana, where he was honored in local media reports and remembered by his unit.
