U.S. Army First Lieutenant Brandon James Landrum, 26, of Lawton, Oklahoma, was killed in a hostile incident in Maiwand, Afghanistan, on May 4, 2013.

Their Story

Brandon James Landrum was a 26-year-old First Lieutenant in the United States Army. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Bliss, Texas. According to unit records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On May 4, 2013, Landrum was killed in Maiwand District, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of a hostile incident, reportedly involving an improvised explosive device (IED). He was the only U.S. service member reported killed in Afghanistan on that date.

Landrum died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2013, the conflict was in a phase focused on training Afghan forces and conducting counterinsurgency operations, particularly in southern provinces like Kandahar where insurgent IED attacks were common.

Following his death, Landrum's body was returned to the United States. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His hometown of Lawton, Oklahoma, held memorial services in his honor.

First Lieutenant Landrum is remembered on memorial walls at Fort Bliss and by his regiment. His name is inscribed on Panel 30W, Line 72 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
