U.S. Army Specialist Joseph Michael Lancour, 21, of Swartz Creek, Michigan, was killed in action on November 10, 2007, in Aranus, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Joseph Michael Lancour was a 21-year-old from Swartz Creek, Michigan. He served as an infantryman with Company C, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, based in Vicenza, Italy.
On November 10, 2007, Lancour was on a dismounted patrol in the village of Aranus in Afghanistan's Kunar Province. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was engaged by enemy small-arms fire during the patrol. Lancour was killed in that engagement.
Lancour's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2007, U.S. and NATO forces were engaged in counterinsurgency operations, particularly in the volatile eastern provinces along the border with Pakistan.
Following his death, Lancour was posthumously promoted from Private First Class to Specialist. He was survived by his parents and siblings. His body was returned to Michigan, where he was buried with military honors.
Lancour is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Michigan's Veterans Memorial Park in Grand Rapids and on online veterans' memorials. He was one of 2356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom.
