Their Story
Joshua Trevyn Lancaster was a 22-year-old soldier from Millbrook, Alabama. He served as a Specialist (SPC) assigned to the 723rd Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company, 184th Ordnance Battalion, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On January 19, 2011, Lancaster was killed at Kandahar Airfield, a major coalition base in southern Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death was the result of a hostile incident. Specific details of the event were not widely released in public reporting.
Lancaster's death occurred during a period of intensified U.S. military operations in Afghanistan. A troop surge, ordered in late 2009, had increased the American presence to roughly 100,000 personnel by 2011, with a focus on insurgent strongholds in the country's south and east, including Kandahar province.
Following his death, the U.S. Army confirmed Lancaster's status as a casualty of Operation Enduring Freedom. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. His remains were returned to Alabama for burial.
Lancaster is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park in Millbrook, Alabama. His name is also inscribed on Panel 18W, Line 15 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Columbus, Georgia.
