Their Story
Michael Scott Lammerts was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army. He served with Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 84th Field Artillery Regiment, part of the 170th Infantry Brigade Combat Team based in Baumholder, Germany. The unit had previously deployed to locations including the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before its assignment to Afghanistan.
On April 4, 2011, Lammerts died in Maymaneh City, the capital of Faryab Province in northern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile action. According to reports, he was killed by an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol.
Lammerts was killed during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. His death occurred during a period of increased U.S. troop presence, known as the surge, which aimed to stabilize the country before a planned transition of security responsibilities to Afghan forces.
Following his death, the Department of Defense officially announced the casualty. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. His body was returned to the United States, and services were held in his hometown of Tonawanda, New York.
Staff Sergeant Lammerts is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Buffalo & Erie County Naval & Military Park. He is also listed on the 170th Infantry Brigade Combat Team memorial in Baumholder, Germany, honoring soldiers from the unit who died during its 2011-2012 deployment.
