Their Story
Jarrod Allen Lallier was a 20-year-old soldier from Spokane, Washington. He served as a paratrooper with Company B, 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
On June 18, 2012, Specialist Lallier died in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile enemy action. He was reportedly killed by small arms fire during a dismounted patrol in the volatile Zhari district, a longtime insurgent stronghold.
Lallier's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2012, the war's focus had shifted to a counterinsurgency and troop surge strategy, with Kandahar province being a central battleground for clearing Taliban-held areas.
Following his death, the Army posthumously awarded Lallier the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations. His body was returned to Washington state, where he was buried with military honors at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake.
He is remembered by his unit and family as a dedicated soldier. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Arena in Spokane.
