Their Story
William Kelly Lacey was a 38-year-old sergeant first class from Laurel, Florida. He served on active duty with the U.S. Army's Company F, 201st Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Knox, Kentucky.
On January 4, 2014, Lacey died in Shinwar district, Nangarhar province, Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense stated his death was the result of a hostile incident, reportedly involving small arms fire during a patrol. He was one of two American soldiers killed in separate incidents in Afghanistan that day.
Lacey's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The operation involved counter-insurgency missions against Taliban and al-Qaeda forces.
His death was reported by multiple U.S. military and news outlets. He was posthumously promoted from staff sergeant to sergeant first class. The Army did not release detailed public statements from his family.
