U.S. Army Sergeant Ronald Alan Kubik, 21, of Brielle, New Jersey, was killed in Logar province, Afghanistan on April 23, 2010.

Their Story

Ronald Alan Kubik was born on July 23, 1988, and grew up in Brielle, New Jersey. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to Company D, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, an elite special operations unit based at Fort Benning, Georgia. He attained the rank of sergeant.

On April 23, 2010, Sergeant Kubik was killed during a combat operation in the Charkh district of Logar province, southeast of Kabul. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was engaged by enemy small arms fire. He was one of two U.S. service members killed in the incident.

Kubik's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2010, the conflict was in a period of intense fighting characterized by counterinsurgency operations and a surge of U.S. forces.

His body was returned to the United States, and a funeral service was held at Saint Denis Church in Manasquan, New Jersey. He was buried at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, New Jersey.

Sergeant Kubik was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Manasquan Circle in New Jersey and on the Ranger Memorial at Fort Benning.
