Their Story
Dale Justin Kridlo was a corporal in the United States Army, serving with the 161st Engineer Company, 27th Engineer Battalion (Combat) (Airborne), 20th Engineer Brigade, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. According to military records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On November 7, 2010, Corporal Kridlo was killed in action approximately five kilometers southwest of Operating Post Bari Alai in Afghanistan's Paktiya Province. The Department of Defense stated he died of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device while conducting a route clearance mission.
Kridlo's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. His unit's mission, route clearance, was among the most dangerous tasks of the conflict, aimed at finding and neutralizing roadside bombs that were a primary cause of coalition casualties.
Following his death, the Defense Casualty Analysis System recorded his loss on the day it occurred. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. A memorial service was held at Fort Bragg, and he was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
Corporal Kridlo is remembered on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Pennsylvania Military Museum and in local tributes in his hometown of Hughestown. His name is inscribed on Panel 6R, Line 127 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
