Their Story
Brandon Jay Kreischer was a 20-year-old soldier from Bryan, Ohio. He served as a Private First Class with Company B, 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
On July 29, 2019, Kreischer was killed during a combat operation in the Shah-Dali Kot area of Kandahar province, Afghanistan. According to U.S. military statements, he died from injuries sustained in a firefight with enemy forces.
Kreischer's death occurred during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. military mission in Afghanistan that succeeded Operation Enduring Freedom in 2015. The mission involved U.S. and allied forces conducting counterterrorism operations and advising Afghan security forces.
The Department of Defense announced his death on July 30, 2019. His body was returned to the United States, and he was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal.
Kreischer was remembered by his unit and community as a dedicated paratrooper. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus.
