U.S. Army Specialist Tyler Richard Kreinz, 21, of Beloit, Wisconsin, was killed in action on June 18, 2011, in Deh Rawud, Afghanistan, while serving with Company C, 4th Battalion, 70th Armor Regiment.
Their Story
Tyler Richard Kreinz was a 21-year-old soldier from Beloit, Wisconsin. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company C, 4th Battalion, 70th Armor Regiment, 170th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, which was based in Baumholder, Germany. His unit deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On June 18, 2011, Kreinz was killed in Deh Rawud, a district in Afghanistan's Uruzgan province. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, he died from wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device (IED).
Kreinz's death occurred during the later years of Operation Enduring Freedom, a conflict that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2011, U.S. and coalition forces were engaged in a counterinsurgency campaign, with a significant troop surge deployed in 2009-2010 to stabilize key regions like southern Afghanistan.
His death was officially announced by the Department of Defense. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. His body was returned to Wisconsin for burial.
Kreinz is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum and on online veterans' memorials. He was one of 2,356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom.
