U.S. Army Sergeant Aaron Keith Kramer, 22, of Salt Lake City, Utah, was killed in hostile action in Kandahar, Afghanistan, on September 16, 2010.

Their Story

Aaron Keith Kramer was a 22-year-old sergeant from Salt Lake City, Utah. He served with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The unit was part of the 101st Airborne Division.

On September 16, 2010, Sergeant Kramer died from wounds sustained during a hostile incident in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, the incident involved an improvised explosive device. He was one of two soldiers from his unit killed that day.

Kramer's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. His unit was deployed to Kandahar, a southern province that was a major center of insurgent activity and a focus of the U.S. troop surge announced in late 2009.

His death was reported by local and national news outlets. The Salt Lake Tribune noted his Utah roots, and the Department of Defense issued a formal casualty announcement. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.

Sergeant Kramer is memorialized on the 101st Airborne Division memorial at Fort Campbell and on online veterans' memorial sites. His name is included on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by several news organizations.
