Koch, Steven Robert
U.S. Army Corporal Steven Robert Koch, 23, of Milltown, New Jersey, was killed in a firefight in Sabari, Afghanistan, on March 3, 2008, while serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment.
Their Story
Steven Robert Koch was born on October 19, 1984, and grew up in Milltown, New Jersey. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned as an infantryman to Company D, 1st Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in the fall of 2007.
On March 3, 2008, Koch was part of a dismounted patrol in the Sabari district of Afghanistan's Khost province. According to U.S. military reports, the patrol came under small-arms fire from enemy forces. Koch was killed during this engagement. Another soldier, Sergeant 1st Class David L. McDowell, was also killed in the same firefight.
Koch's death occurred during a period of intense fighting in eastern Afghanistan. The Taliban and other insurgent groups had regrouped and intensified attacks following their initial defeat in 2001. The U.S.-led coalition's strategy in 2008 involved a significant troop surge and a focus on counterinsurgency operations in provinces like Khost, which bordered Pakistan's tribal areas and served as a major infiltration route.
Koch's body was returned to the United States. A funeral service was held at St. Paul's Church in Milltown, and he was buried with full military honors at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, New Jersey. The Department of Defense officially announced his death on March 5, 2008.
Corporal Koch was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. He is remembered on memorials in his hometown and by his unit. His death was part of a sharp increase in U.S. casualties in Afghanistan in 2008, a year that saw 155 American service members killed, more than double the number from the previous year.
