Their Story

Jabraun Steven Knox was a 23-year-old sergeant from Fort Wayne, Indiana. He served in Battery B, 1st Battalion (Air Assault), 377th Field Artillery Regiment, 17th Fires Brigade, based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Knox died on May 18, 2012, in Asadabad, the capital of Afghanistan's Kunar Province. The official casualty report listed his death as resulting from hostile action. No further specifics regarding the incident were publicly released by the military.

His death occurred during the later stages of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2012, a surge of U.S. forces had been drawn down, but combat operations, particularly in eastern provinces like Kunar, continued at a high intensity.

The Fort Wayne Journal Gazette reported on his death, noting he was a 2007 graduate of North Side High School. He was survived by his mother and other family members in Indiana. His body was returned to Fort Wayne for burial.

Sergeant Knox is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists and by veterans' groups. His name is inscribed on the Indiana Fallen Heroes Memorial in Indianapolis.
