U.S. Army Specialist Marques Irving Knight, 24, of San Juan Capistrano, California, was killed in the Korengal Valley, Afghanistan, on September 6, 2008.

Their Story

Marques Irving Knight was a 24-year-old specialist in the United States Army. He was assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Hood, Texas. Knight was from San Juan Capistrano, California.

On September 6, 2008, Specialist Knight was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol in the Korengal Valley of eastern Afghanistan's Kunar Province. The patrol was part of a larger operation in the valley, a region known for its rugged terrain and persistent insurgent activity.

Knight's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The Korengal Valley, often called the 'Valley of Death,' was a focal point of intense combat for U.S. forces, who established a series of outposts there to disrupt insurgent supply routes.

According to the Department of Defense, Knight was one of two soldiers killed in the same engagement that day. The other soldier was identified as Specialist Joshua L. Plocica. Their deaths were reported by multiple news outlets at the time.

Marques Irving Knight is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists and by veterans' organizations. He was one of 2356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom.
