Michael Joseph Knapp was a 28-year-old sergeant from Overland Park, Kansas. He served on active duty in the U.S. Army with Battery B, 1st Battalion, 377th Field Artillery Regiment, 17th Fires Brigade, based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington.
According to the Department of Defense, Sergeant Knapp died on May 18, 2012, in Asadabad, Kunar Province, Afghanistan. The official casualty report lists the cause as hostile. No further specifics regarding the exact nature of the incident were publicly released.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001.
