Their Story

Corporal Chris K. Kleinwachter was a soldier from Wahpeton, North Dakota. He served with Battery A, 1st Battalion, 188th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, part of Task Force Spartan based in Grand Forks, North Dakota. His unit's mission included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On November 30, 2006, Kleinwachter died from wounds sustained during combat operations in the Ab Band District of Ghazni province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he was killed while conducting combat operations. Specific details of the engagement were not released.

Kleinwachter's death occurred during a period of escalating violence in Afghanistan. Following his death, Kleinwachter's body was returned to the United States. A memorial service was held in his hometown of Wahpeton, where he was remembered by family, friends, and fellow soldiers. The Grand Forks Herald reported on the community's mourning and the military's confirmation of his death.

Corporal Kleinwachter is memorialized on the North Dakota Veterans Memorial and the National Fallen Heroes Memorial. His name is also inscribed on Panel 16E, Line 129 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
