Kitowski, Charles Bernard Iii
Sgt. Charles Bernard Kitowski III, 31, of Farmers Branch, Texas, was a U.S. Army Reserve soldier with the 345th Psychological Operations Company. He was killed in Kuzkala Khel, Afghanistan, on August 12, 2007.
Their Story
Charles Bernard Kitowski III was a 31-year-old sergeant from Farmers Branch, Texas. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve as a member of the 345th Psychological Operations Company, 2nd Psychological Operations Battalion, based in Dallas.
On August 12, 2007, Kitowski was killed during a patrol in the village of Kuzkala Khel, in the Pech district of Afghanistan's Kunar province. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was conducting a dismounted patrol when it came under small-arms fire from enemy forces. Kitowski was fatally wounded in the engagement.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2007, the conflict had entered a phase of intensified insurgency, with Taliban and other militant forces regrouping. Attacks, including ambushes and improvised explosive devices, were increasing in frequency, particularly in eastern provinces like Kunar.
The Department of Defense announced Kitowski's death on August 14, 2007. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His remains were returned to Texas, where he was buried at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.
Kitowski is remembered on memorial walls in Texas and by his unit. His name is listed on the Texas Capitol's memorial for veterans of the Global War on Terror.
