Their Story

Brandon Michael Kirton was a 25-year-old soldier from Englewood, Colorado. He served as a corporal in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company C, 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

On May 18, 2011, Corporal Kirton was killed in Bur-Mohammad, a village in the volatile Zhari District of Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense listed the cause as hostile fire. Reports from the time indicate his unit was engaged in operations in the district, a known Taliban stronghold.

Kirton's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, the war was in its tenth year, with U.S. and allied forces heavily engaged in counterinsurgency operations in southern provinces like Kandahar.

Kirton's death was announced by the Department of Defense. He was survived by his family in Colorado. A memorial service was reportedly held at Fort Campbell.

Corporal Kirton is memorialized on the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division memorial at Fort Campbell and on online veterans' memorials. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Colorado Freedom Memorial in Aurora.
