U.S. Army Sergeant Joshua John Kirk, 30, of South Portland, Maine, was killed in hostile action on October 3, 2009, in Kamdesh, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Joshua John Kirk was a 30-year-old sergeant from South Portland, Maine. He served with Troop B, 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Carson, Colorado. He was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Sergeant Kirk died on October 3, 2009, during the Battle of Kamdesh, a coordinated assault by insurgents on Combat Outpost Keating in Nuristan Province. The remote outpost was overrun in a fierce, day-long firefight. Eight U.S. soldiers were killed and more than two dozen wounded in one of the deadliest ground engagements for American forces in Afghanistan that year.

The battle occurred during a period of the war marked by a resurgent Taliban and increased attacks on isolated U.S. outposts. The U.S. strategy at the time included establishing forward operating bases in remote valleys to disrupt insurgent networks, a tactic that left troops vulnerable. The outpost at Kamdesh was scheduled for closure at the time of the attack.

In the aftermath, the U.S. military withdrew from the outpost and conducted airstrikes on the area. The battle prompted a Congressional investigation into the decisions that led to troops being stationed in such a vulnerable position. Sergeant Kirk was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Valor for his actions during the battle.

Kirk is remembered by family and fellow soldiers as a dedicated professional. His name is inscribed on the South Portland Veterans Memorial. The battle was later detailed in military reports and books examining the war in Afghanistan.
