Jarrid Lee King, a 20-year-old U.S. Army Corporal from Erie, Pennsylvania, was killed in a hostile incident in Spine Ghundey, Ghelan, on January 12, 2011.

Their Story

Jarrid Lee King was born and raised in Erie, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the United States Army and was assigned as a combat engineer, or sapper, to the 693rd Engineer Company (Sapper), 7th Engineer Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade, based at Fort Drum, New York.

On January 12, 2011, Corporal King was killed in Spine Ghundey, a village in the Ghelan district of Afghanistan's Kunar Province. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile fire. According to contemporaneous reporting, his unit was engaged by insurgent small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol in the area.

King's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In early 2011, U.S. and allied forces were heavily engaged in counterinsurgency operations in eastern Afghanistan, particularly in rugged provinces like Kunar along the Pakistan border.

Following his death, King's body was returned to the United States. A funeral service was held in his hometown of Erie. The Army posthumously awarded him the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations.

Corporal King is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Department of Defense and on several veterans' memorial websites. His name is included on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Drum.
