King, Brandon Michael
U.S. Army Private First Class Brandon Michael King, 23, of Tallahassee, Florida, died on July 14, 2010, at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, from hostile action.
Their Story
Brandon Michael King was a 23-year-old soldier from Tallahassee, Florida. He served as a Private First Class with Battery A, 1st Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On July 14, 2010, King was killed at Kandahar Airfield (KAF), a major NATO base in southern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death resulted from hostile action. Reports from the time indicate the base came under indirect fire, such as rocket or mortar attack, a common insurgent tactic against large coalition installations.
King's death occurred during a period of intense fighting in the Afghanistan War, also known as Operation Enduring Freedom (2001–2014). The summer of 2010 saw a major U.S. and NATO troop surge, with operations focused on securing Kandahar province, the Taliban's spiritual heartland. Kandahar Airfield was a frequent target for insurgent attacks.
Following his death, the Department of Defense officially announced the loss. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Private First Class. Memorial services were held in his honor, both in Afghanistan and in his home state of Florida.
King is memorialized on the 1st Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment's unit memorial and on the Afghanistan War casualty lists. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans Park of Tallahassee-Leon County.
