Their Story
Jeffrey Duane Kettle was a Sergeant First Class in the United States Army, assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. A native of Madill, Oklahoma, he was 31 years old at the time of his death. His service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On August 12, 2007, Kettle was killed during combat operations in the village of Kuzkalakhel, located in the Paktika Province of eastern Afghanistan. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was engaged in a firefight with enemy forces when he was fatally wounded.
Kettle's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The conflict involved coalition forces, the Afghan National Army, and insurgent groups, including the Taliban and al-Qaeda, primarily in southern and eastern provinces like Paktika.
Following his death, Kettle was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors. The Department of Defense officially announced his death on August 14, 2007.
Kettle is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists and on the Special Forces Memorial Wall at Fort Bragg. His name is also inscribed on the Madill Veterans Memorial in his Oklahoma hometown.
