U.S. Army Sergeant Michael Jason Kelley, 26, of Scituate, Massachusetts, was killed in a hostile incident on June 8, 2005, at Forward Operating Base Salerno in Afghanistan.
Their Story
Michael Jason Kelley was a 26-year-old sergeant from Scituate, Massachusetts. He served with Battery E, 101st Field Artillery Battalion, part of the Massachusetts Army National Guard, based in Rehoboth. His unit was assigned to the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force (CJSOTF) in Afghanistan, and he had previously deployed to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.
On June 8, 2005, Kelley was killed at Forward Operating Base Salerno in Khost Province, near the border with Pakistan. According to U.S. military reports, the base came under a coordinated attack involving small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. Kelley died from wounds sustained during this assault.
Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2005, the conflict had evolved into a protracted counterinsurgency against Taliban and Al-Qaeda forces. Forward Operating Base Salerno was a key logistical and special operations hub frequently targeted by insurgent attacks.
Kelley's death was reported by the Department of Defense and local New England media. He was posthumously promoted to sergeant. He was survived by his parents and siblings. A memorial service was held in Massachusetts.
