Andrew James Keller was a 22-year-old U.S. Army Private First Class from Tigard, Oregon. He was killed in a hostile incident in Charkh, Afghanistan, on August 15, 2012.

Their Story

Andrew James Keller was born in Tigard, Oregon, and enlisted in the United States Army. He was assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, based at Camp Ederle in Italy. Before his deployment to Afghanistan, his service reportedly included rotations to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.

On August 15, 2012, Private First Class Keller was killed in Charkh district, Logar province, Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death was the result of a hostile incident involving small arms fire. He was 22 years old.

Keller's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The operation, which involved counter-insurgency and stability missions, was in its eleventh year at the time of his death. The Logar province, south of Kabul, was an area of significant insurgent activity.

Following his death, Keller's body was returned to the United States. The Oregonian newspaper reported on his funeral service in Tigard, noting he was remembered by family and friends as a dedicated soldier. The U.S. Army posthumously awarded him the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations.

His name is inscribed on the Oregon Memorial for the Global War on Terrorism in Salem. He is also listed on the Afghanistan War casualty rolls maintained by the U.S. National Archives and on memorial websites dedicated to fallen service members.
