Their Story
Jeremy Andrew Katzenberger was born on August 21, 1984, and grew up in Weatherby Lake, Missouri. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and, after completing the rigorous Ranger Assessment and Selection Program, was assigned to the 75th Ranger Regiment, an elite special operations unit based at Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia. His service included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa prior to his assignment in Afghanistan.
On June 14, 2011, Staff Sergeant Katzenberger was killed during a combat operation in the vicinity of Forward Operating Base Sharana in Paktika Province. According to U.S. Department of Defense statements, he died from wounds sustained during a firefight with enemy forces. The operation was part of ongoing counterinsurgency efforts in the volatile eastern region bordering Pakistan.
Katzenberger's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the 9/11 attacks. By 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, characterized by a surge of U.S. forces aimed at dismantling Taliban strongholds and training Afghan security forces. Paktika Province was a known insurgent transit and staging area.
His death was announced by the Department of Defense. He was posthumously promoted from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant. A memorial service was held at Hunter Army Airfield, and he was buried with full military honors. His awards included the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal.
Staff Sergeant Katzenberger is remembered by his unit and community as a dedicated soldier. His name is inscribed on the Ranger Memorial at Fort Benning, Georgia, and on casualty lists honoring those who died in the Afghanistan war.
