Their Story

Christopher M. Katzenberger was a 25-year-old soldier from St. Louis, Missouri. He served as a Specialist with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of Task Force Devil based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Katzenberger died on August 9, 2005, at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan. The official casualty report lists his death as resulting from hostile action. No further specifics regarding the incident were detailed in the initial release.

Katzenberger's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2005, insurgent forces had regrouped, and the use of improvised explosive devices and other asymmetric attacks against coalition forces was increasing.

Following his death, Katzenberger was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His funeral was held in his hometown of St. Louis.

He is remembered on memorials at Fort Bragg and within the 82nd Airborne Division community. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the University of Missouri–St. Louis.
