Their Story
Robert Paul Kassin was a 29-year-old sergeant from Las Vegas, Nevada, serving with the U.S. Army's Company C, 2nd Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, part of Task Force Warrior based at Fort Polk, Louisiana. He was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On July 16, 2006, Sergeant Kassin was killed during combat operations in the village of Larzab, located in the southern province of Zabul. According to military reports, his unit was engaged in a firefight with anti-government forces when he was fatally wounded.
Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2006, the conflict was characterized by a resurgence of Taliban activity and intense combat in the country's southern and eastern regions, where U.S. and allied forces conducted counterinsurgency operations.
The Department of Defense announced Kassin's death on July 18, 2006. He was one of at least ten U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan during that month, reflecting a period of heightened violence during the summer fighting season.
