Christopher Neal Karch was a 23-year-old soldier from Indianapolis, Indiana. He served as a sergeant with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His unit, part of the 82nd Airborne Division, deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On August 11, 2010, Sergeant Karch died at the Role III Multinational Medical Unit at Kandahar Airfield. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his death was the result of wounds suffered from a hostile incident. The specific details of the engagement that led to his fatal injuries were not publicly released in official casualty reports.
Karch's death occurred during a period of intense fighting in southern Afghanistan.
