Their Story
Jeremy Mitchell Kane was from Towson, Maryland. He served as a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, assigned to the 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Marine Division, based in Frederick, Maryland. Before his deployment to Afghanistan, his unit had conducted training and security missions in locations including the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.
On January 23, 2010, Kane was killed while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, southern Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he died of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device (IED) while on a dismounted patrol. He was one of two Marines killed in the incident.
Kane's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In early 2010, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in a major troop surge, with intense fighting concentrated in Taliban strongholds within Helmand province, such as Marjah and Sangin.
His body was returned to the United States, and a funeral service was held at St. Joseph Church in Cockeysville, Maryland. He was buried at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens. The Baltimore Sun reported that hundreds attended the service, including fellow Marines and members of the local community.
Lance Corporal Kane was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. He is remembered on memorials including the National Fallen Heroes Memorial and the Afghanistan War Memorial at Dulaney Valley. His name is listed on the casualty rolls maintained by the Defense Department and independent archives documenting the war's toll.
