Sgt. Dennis Edward Kancler, 26, of Brecksville, Ohio, was a U.S. Marine killed in action on July 31, 2011, in Herat, Afghanistan, during Operation Enduring Freedom.
Their Story
Dennis Edward Kancler was a 26-year-old sergeant from Brecksville, Ohio. He served on active duty with the United States Marine Corps, assigned to the 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
On July 31, 2011, Sgt. Kancler was killed in Herat province in western Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died while conducting combat operations. He was one of two Marines from his battalion killed in the incident.
Operation Enduring Freedom was the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The mission initially focused on dismantling al-Qaeda and removing the Taliban from power, evolving into a protracted counterinsurgency and stability operation.
The deaths of Sgt. Kancler and his fellow Marine were reported by multiple news outlets. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried in Ohio. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Ohio Statehouse.
