Kalafut, Christopher Edward
Commander Christopher Edward Kalafut, a 49-year-old U.S. Navy Reserve officer from Oceanside, California, was killed in action in Doha, Qatar, on October 24, 2014.
Their Story
Christopher Edward Kalafut was a Commander in the United States Navy Reserve. He was assigned to Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT) Detachment Qatar, a unit supporting U.S. military operations in the Middle East from its headquarters in Doha.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Kalafut died from wounds sustained in a shooting at the Qatari police academy in Doha on October 24, 2014. The incident reportedly involved a Qatari police officer who opened fire, killing two individuals before being shot dead. Kalafut was one of the two fatalities; the other was a South African contractor.
Kalafut's death occurred under Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), the official U.S. military designation for the war in Afghanistan and related global counterterrorism operations. By late 2014, the main U.S. combat mission in Afghanistan was concluding, but personnel remained deployed across the region in support and advisory roles.
The shooting was investigated by Qatari authorities. The U.S. Navy confirmed Kalafut's death in a press release, stating he died while supporting OEF. His remains were returned to the United States.
Kalafut was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart medal. He is memorialized on the Navy Memorial's roll of honor and by veterans' organizations in California.
