Ramon Taisakan Kaipat was a 22-year-old from Tacoma, Washington, who served as an active-duty Marine. He was assigned to the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, based out of Camp Pendleton, California.
On April 11, 2012, Lance Cpl. Kaipat died in Helmand province, Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense listed his death as the result of hostile action. He was one of two Marines from his battalion killed on that date, according to casualty reports.
Kaipat's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan. In 2012, Helmand province remained a major center of insurgent activity and intense combat, despite a surge of U.S. forces in prior years. The 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion was engaged in security and counterinsurgency operations in the region.
His death was reported by the Department of Defense and local news outlets in Washington state. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of lance corporal. A memorial service was held at his home unit at Camp Pendleton.
