Their Story

James Austin Justice was a 21-year-old soldier from Grover, North Carolina. He served as a Specialist in Company C, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, which was based at Camp Ederle in Vicenza, Italy.

Justice died from wounds sustained in a hostile incident in Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he was injured by enemy small arms fire in the volatile Kunar Province on August 14, 2012. He was evacuated for treatment to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, where he died two days later.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2012, the conflict was characterized by intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in eastern provinces like Kunar, where U.S. and allied forces engaged Taliban and other insurgent groups.

The Department of Defense announced his death in a press release on August 17, 2012. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried in his home state of North Carolina. Local news outlets in Cleveland County reported on his funeral services.
