Staff Sgt. James Alan Justice, 32, of Manning, Iowa, was a soldier with the Iowa Army National Guard. He was killed in a hostile incident in Sadiqan Village, Kapisa province, Afghanistan, on April 23, 2011.

Their Story

James Alan Justice was a 32-year-old from Manning, Iowa. He served with Troop C, 1st Squadron, 113th Cavalry Regiment, part of the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team based in Le Mars, Iowa, as a member of the Iowa Army National Guard.

According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Staff Sgt. Justice died on April 23, 2011, in Sadiqan Village, located in Afghanistan's Kapisa province. The official cause was listed as hostile fire. A contemporaneous news report from the *Sioux City Journal* stated he was killed by small arms fire during a dismounted patrol.

Justice died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, Kapisa province was an area of significant insurgent activity, and U.S. forces there were engaged in counterinsurgency and training missions alongside Afghan troops.

Following his death, Justice's body was returned to Iowa. A funeral service was held in Manning, and he was buried with military honors in the Manning Cemetery. The Iowa National Guard publicly acknowledged his sacrifice, and his name was added to the state's veterans memorial.

Staff Sgt. Justice is remembered on the Iowa Fallen Heroes Memorial and is listed on the Afghanistan War memorial at the Iowa State Capitol. His name is also inscribed on Panel 33W, Line 65 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Georgia.
