Their Story
Tyler Austin Juden was a 23-year-old sergeant from Winfield, Kansas. He served with Troop C, 4th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Before his deployment to Afghanistan, his service reportedly included assignments in the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.
On September 12, 2009, Juden was killed during combat operations in the village of Turan, located in the Bala Buluk district of Afghanistan's Farah Province. According to military reports, his unit was engaged in a firefight with Taliban insurgents. The specific incident that caused his death was not detailed in public releases beyond the classification of 'hostile.'
Juden's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001.
