Lance Corporal Mark David Juarez, 23, of San Antonio, Texas, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on January 9, 2010.

Their Story

Mark David Juarez was a 23-year-old Marine from San Antonio, Texas. He served with Headquarters and Service Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 7, part of the 3rd Marine Division based at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay. His service reportedly included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before his assignment to Afghanistan.

On January 9, 2010, Lance Corporal Juarez was killed by hostile action while conducting operations in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense announced his death the following day. He was one of at least three American service members killed in Afghanistan that day.

Juarez died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By early 2010, the conflict was in its ninth year, with a significant focus on counterinsurgency operations in Taliban strongholds like Helmand province.

His death was reported by national and local news outlets, including the San Antonio Express-News. The Marine Corps released a statement confirming he died supporting combat operations. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart medal.

Lance Corporal Juarez is remembered on memorial walls and in online tributes maintained by veterans' groups. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the University of Texas at San Antonio, which honors alumni who died in the conflict.
