Lance Corporal Kevin Boyd Joyce, 19, of Ganado, Arizona, was a U.S. Marine killed in action on June 25, 2005, at Forward Operating Base Blessing, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Kevin Boyd Joyce was born in Ganado, Arizona, a community within the Navajo Nation. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned as a rifleman to Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, based at Marine Corps Base Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. He deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in early 2005.
On June 25, 2005, Joyce was killed during combat operations at Forward Operating Base Blessing in the Pech District of Afghanistan's Kunar Province. According to the Department of Defense, he was fatally wounded by enemy small-arms fire while his unit was engaged in a firefight with anti-coalition militia forces.
Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By mid-2005, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations in the country's eastern mountainous regions, including Kunar Province, where insurgent activity was frequent.
Joyce's death was reported by national and local news outlets, including The Arizona Republic. His body was returned to Arizona, and he was buried with military honors. The Department of Defense officially announced his death on June 27, 2005.
Lance Corporal Joyce is remembered on memorials dedicated to fallen service members from the Navajo Nation and at the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines memorial in Hawaii. His name is inscribed on Panel 2E, Row 11 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
