Their Story

Richard Kelvin Jones was a 21-year-old soldier from Person, North Carolina. He served as a Private First Class with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Carson, Colorado. His military service included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before his assignment to Afghanistan.

On August 1, 2009, Jones was killed during combat operations in Mushan village, located in Afghanistan's Zabul province. According to the Defense Casualty Analysis System, his death was the result of hostile action. The specific incident was not detailed in official releases, but the area was known for insurgent activity.

Jones died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2009, the conflict was in a period of intense fighting as international forces attempted to counter a resurgent Taliban, particularly in southern and eastern provinces like Zabul.
