Their Story

Payton Alexander Jones was a 19-year-old soldier from Marble Falls, Texas. He served with Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On March 1, 2012, Specialist Jones was killed at Combat Outpost Sangsar in the Maiwand district of Kandahar province. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death resulted from a hostile incident involving small arms fire. The outpost was in a region known for insurgent activity.

Operation Enduring Freedom was the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2012, the conflict was in its eleventh year, with U.S. and allied forces engaged in counterinsurgency operations and training Afghan national security forces. The area around Kandahar was a focal point of the war.

Jones's death was reported by the Department of Defense on March 5, 2012. He was survived by his mother, father, and sister. His body was returned to Texas, where he was buried at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park in Burnet County.

Specialist Jones was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Georgia.
