U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Landon Le Jones, 35, of Lompoc, California, was killed in action on September 22, 2013, while serving with Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron Six (HSC-6) in Afghanistan.

Their Story

Landon Le Jones was a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy, assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron Six (HSC-6), known as the 'Screamin' Indians,' based at Naval Air Station North Island, California. He was a native of Lompoc, California, and was 35 years old at the time of his death.

On September 22, 2013, Jones was killed in a helicopter crash in the vicinity of the Tarin Kowt district in Afghanistan's Uruzgan province. The MH-60S Knighthawk helicopter crashed during a mission in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, the crash was not the result of enemy fire.

Jones's death occurred during the final phase of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, which began in October 2001. By 2013, the U.S. and NATO had begun a significant drawdown of combat forces, shifting to a train-and-advise role. The conflict was characterized by continued insurgent activity even as international forces prepared to withdraw.

Following the crash, the Navy announced Jones's death the next day. His remains were returned to the United States. The incident was investigated by U.S. military authorities, who reportedly cited environmental factors as a possible cause.

Jones is memorialized on the Navy Memorial's 'Honor Wall' and in the Defense Casualty Analysis System. His squadron, HSC-6, continued its mission, which included combat search and rescue, special warfare support, and logistics.
