Their Story

Travon Travis Johnson was a 29-year-old sergeant from Ontario, California. He served with Company D, 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, based in Vicenza, Italy. The unit was part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, which was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On July 23, 2007, Sergeant Johnson was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol in the Sarobi District of Afghanistan's Kabul Province. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he died from wounds sustained in a hostile engagement.

Johnson's death occurred during a period of intense fighting in Afghanistan. The U.S.-led coalition and Afghan National Army forces were conducting counterinsurgency operations against Taliban and other militant groups, particularly in the volatile eastern provinces. The 173rd Airborne Brigade was engaged in a major offensive in the region during the summer of 2007.

His death was reported by several news outlets, including the Associated Press and the Los Angeles Times. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. A memorial service was held in Vicenza, Italy, and he was buried at Riverside National Cemetery in California.

Sergeant Johnson is remembered on memorial walls at his battalion headquarters in Italy and at the National Infantry Museum in Georgia. His name is inscribed on Panel 22E, Line 73 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Pentagon.
